Success Story

79 boys & girls from Anse-a-Veau preparing for their future in martial arts

On November 26 2011, two executive members of the Haitian Sports Foundation Mr Turnier Esperance, President and Mr Christopher Ross, Vice President went to Anse-a-Veau, Haiti to assess the level of the young boys and girls in Karate. They all started their practice in September 2011.

All the children looked clean and practiced with a great deal of enthusiasm and determination. They practiced under the view of their parents and the newly Parent Association which will be responsible to take ownership of the future community center.

The children gave their heart. They will be ready to receive thier first Karate belt in April 2012.

Thank you to professors Diegue Blendel and Wilfrid Jean-Pierre who are doing a great job to coach those kids.

What's Happening

HSF Santa: My Journey to Haiti, Mario Arthur December 2011This trip was experimental; it was an opportunity to celebrate the Holiday with two of the many programs supported by HSF. HSF in Carrefour:The journey started in Carrefour at “Pitié Pou Ti Moun”. I was joined by Karen De Guise, from Washington and begun the activities around noon time. We begun with the usual performance by the different groups performing dance, songs and game. Karen was dressed like Santa and begun the distribution of T-shirts and other gifts resulting from Art & Craft and workshop and History competition quiz.. The event started out with 70 children and it quickly grew by 25% until things started to be a bit crowed due to excitement and the desire for each child to receive a gift. Each teacher and volunteers received a regular gift in addition to food and drink. It was a big surprise when Karen showed up in her Santa uniform. The kids, the teachers and the parents love it. HSF Anse-A-VeauOur second journey took us to Anse-á-Veau (180 South of the Capital). There, parents, Karate students were there to greet us. Again, Santa made its grand appearance to the delight of everyone. Everyone received drinks snacks and cookies. The children were in their clean Karate uniform. They are hungry to learn, they gave it all. They were disciplined and well manners. Santa played trivia games with them. There was no language barrier when it comes to Santa. The parent group was very engaged. Everyone wants to know when we will start the construction of the center. Indeed, Anse-á-Veau needs help. A great deal of help. Many of the kids have not received a formal and nutritious meal for days. The local restaurant was closed and there was no activity for anyone. We couldn’t find food in spite of our purchasing power. The parent group presented their “wish list” for 2012. It consists of the following: • Begin construction of the community center• Move the Karate program in door in the new center. This will provide a sense of ownership • concrete them the Karate group will be able to operate there.• Provide a generator or solar electric to power the computer room. • Perform basic repair in the existing building• Initiate the English and the Computer classes• Provide internet accessThe Parent group wants to see some real concrete and tangible activities i.e. construction. They believed that a simple quick fix would demonstrate our sincerity and commitment. The instructors Diegue Blendel and Wilfrid Jean-Pierre developed a strong bond with the kids. They are both committed to move forward Blendell commit to permanently relocate to Anse-A-Veau so he would only need coverage for vacation visit to see his mother in Cap.
January 2012 Dear Friends: Happy New Year and may 2012 be the best for you and your family. The Haitian Sports Foundation (HSF) journey started in July 2006 when together with my colleagues Mario Arthur and Georges Aschkar, Jr we founded this organization with the goal to provide assistance to Haitian athletes and encourage children to practice sports and physical education and participate fully in the development of sports throughout Haiti.As we started to become familiar with the reality of Haiti, we learned that the sports infrastructure of the country was basically nonexistent. Out of 4 Million children less than 18 years old only 35, 000 (<1%) are exposed to some level of sports activities. The country has just 30 licensed instructors dedicated to physical education, and most schools have no place for student to participate in sport activities or develop competitive skills. Thus, we made a decision to first work with established social programs and institutions by boosting their sports activities either through direct assistance and/or by paying monitors to supervise sports programs for the children. From 2006 through 2011, we have worked with nine groups and provided financial assistance, conducted seminars, delivered sports equipment, clothing, and school supplies. We also paid academic teachers and student tuition for language classes.While supporting these programs was important, we always wanted to have a place to call our own. A place with facilities to establish programs for sports as well as cultural and educative alternatives. Then came Anse-à-Veau; a town located at 180 kms South of Port-au-Prince. The town of Anse- à -Veau offered HSF the opportunity to establish its headquarters and also build a center for the children of the region and the athletes of Haiti to practice sports activities, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, and martial arts. The center will also provide facilities for youth to develop artistic talents, learn English, and learn computer technology. HSF believes that “the future of Haiti belongs to the youth of today”.On July 5th, 2011, the Mayor of Anse- à -Veau (Mr. Telisme); the Vice governor of the region (Mr. Fritznel Presmy); the activist of the town, Mr. Yves Cassamajor signed and presented HSF the official deed to 5 acres of land to build the multi-purpose community center. This initiative was supported by Bishop Dumas; Deputy Solon and the legislative body who came together with the youth of the population to place the first “stone” on the property where the center will reside.As we are embracing this new initiative, we made a pact with history, a commitment with the youth of Anse-a-Veau and the athletes of Haiti. This is an ambitious goal, and with your help, we will build this facility and establish a foundation for physical, cultural and educational development. The children of Haiti are waiting for us. The children of Haiti are waiting for you. Together we can develop future champions, new leaders, engaged citizens and provide opportunities only dreamed of before. The Haitian Sports Foundation (HSF) since its inception in July 2006 has provided a range of services, instruction, and training for Haitian youth. It was founded and is headquartered in the United States and is certified as a non profit 501(c) (3) organization. HSF provides sports activities including soccer, martial arts, basketball, track and field, table tennis and volleyball. In addition, HSF offers academic support and daily meals to participating youth ages 6 to 17 years old.

The January 12 earthquake that struck Haiti severely impacted the HSF on-going programs with its local in-Haiti non-profit organizations. Soccer fields and other open spaces are now carpeted with temporary shelters (tents, tarps, wooden huts) offering little protection in many Haitian neighborhoods. Camps are being created throughout neighborhoods damaged by the earthquake. HSF has established and long standing partnerships in three neighborhoods and continues its programs that provide support for the residents. HSF is responding to the devastation by providing food and medical services. Additionally it provides athletic and educational services for children in these neighborhoods.

The earthquake and its aftermath have required HSF to modify its operations as result of the major interruption in its services. The Haitian neighborhoods and communities where the services are provided have undergone serious physical damage. The neighborhood facilities where children once gathered -- to participate in physical education classes, receive meals and psychological counseling -- are undergoing immediate and long term rebuilding. The children now more than ever require opportunities to continue to participate in the activities provided by the foundation.

This Project Renaissance Initiative is the beginning of HSF effort to continue to provide assistance to the children and the program monitors/instructors. Our immediate financial need is for the period March 1 through December 30, 2010. It is essential that HSF maintains its on-going services of athletic training, education, food for the children, monthly financial stipends for monitors/instructors, and support for in-Haiti partner organizations.

This Project Renaissance Initiative activity is an important beginning of strategic plan. HSF officers are simultaneously and concurrently working with partner organizations to prepare and develop an in-depth long term needs assessment. This assessment will be completed by mid August 2010. It will be a detailed three year plan to include the rebuilding of partner earthquake damaged facilities as well as the construction of a new multi-purpose community center.

Our Vision Build a community center (Project renaissance) to provide multi services such as after school program, sports, medical and computer training. The facility will have a clinic, kitchen, classroom, meeting room, outdoor pad area for multi usage basketball, volleyball and other table games. Our Mission Use sports as a means to enhance the quality of life for the children of Haiti. HSF will do this by establishing developmental programs and recreational activities in safe environment for children between 6 and 17 years old. Our Values HSF believes that each child has the potential to succeed if the opportunity is given to him or her. HSF is determined to work with established organizations to provide the environment needed to develop children through formal education and sports activities.

Would Like to introduce Jennyflore Vincent.

Jennyflore is a young athlete who lives in Limonade, North part of Haiti. She has been practicing Judo for over 5 years at the Femina Club under the supervision of Dr Romel Jean-Pierre.

She just returned from Mexico where she won the silver medal in her division at the Pan American Olympic game. The Haitian Sports Foundation is a proud sponsor of her academic study.

2011 Camp in Haiti _ A New Page

The Haitian Sports Foundation (HSF) in collaboration with Haiti Aujourd’hui et Demain (HADEM), their executive board, 16 volunteers which included two medical doctors, two nurses, four teachers, an accountant sponsored their first annual Sport Camp. What an experience! The camp was a total success in spite of a limited budget. The children left with great joy and they learn a great deal about public speaking, English, The Environment, Civic duties, sports etc.

The kids that participated in the camp came from all corner of Haiti including Regnier, Limonade, Leogane, Carrefour, Cap and Milot.

According to Master Ostin, from the Tae Kwon Do program states: “It was quiet an honorable experience to work with the Taekwondo practitioners in Haiti. I want to express special thanks to Master Leo Cartright for giving me the opportunity to be the first World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) International Referee for Haiti. Mr. Cartright shows that he is ready to work with Haitians living abroad and to represent their country in the art of Taekwondo. He developed a strategic partner with the Haitian Sport Foundations (HSF) which sponsors the success of the seminar. I had a wonderful time working with the students at the seminar and I am looking forward to more exchange in the future. I am proud to be a member of HSF because it creates an environment where both instructors and students can come together and learn from each other. “Computer donation was made to the registered programs and some other schools and social institutions.

Approaching its Fifth Anniversary

In July, HSF will celebrate its fifth year anniversary. As a result, HSF is in the process of establishing a permanent location to hold their sports camp and build a community center. The center, which will become HSF’s headquarter in Haiti, will to serve Haitian youth from all regions. This center will be the first of its kind in Haiti. Major initiatives are being developed to train Haitian coaches, to enhance their skills and knowledge through additional courses at one of the top university in the United States. A specific curriculum is being developed to serve solely Haitian athletes.

Although we have been in this business for five years, we are still in need of contributions. The contributions will be used towards additional camp for the children, community center, sports equipment, physical education, computers and music. If you are interested in a trip to Haiti, your time is also needed. We are currently seeking volunteer for our next mission trip.

Dear Friends/Supporters: Imagine a country of 6 million inhabitants where only “35,000 children under the age of 18 years old have access to some level of sports activities”. Imagine a country of 6 million inhabitants with only “30 physical education instructors”. Imagine a country with only “one stadium capable to host 12,000 spectators”. Imagine athletes participating in major international tournaments without proper uniform, basic equipments and adequate nutrients. Imagine children playing Soccer, Volleyball and Basketball ball barefooted. Imagine no more. These are the facts that we either compiled and/or witnessed. We can not resolve all problems. However, as athletes originated from this great country, we feel a social obligation to help out and provide basic assistance to the different sports organizations in Haiti and to needed Haitian athletes across all sports disciplines.
